Golf
Golf is almost a year-round activity in New Mexico. It does get a bit chilly in January and February, but snow tends to melt rapidly off the courses, so one can play almost every day. The following are courses within an hour and a half drive of Santa Fe.
Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe 955.4400
Just 20 minutes from the Plaza, the 27-hole course is considered by many to be the best golfing in Northern New Mexico. The 18-hole course has five tee-box locations and measures between 7,415 yards from the championship tees to 5,045 from the front tee boxes. The links-style course provides beautiful 360-degree views and undulating greens. The 9-hole course, with four tee-box locations per hole, will test a golfer’s expertise. Just 15 minutes from the Santa Fe Plaza is the newest golf club in the area. It opened 18 of its 36 holes in Sept. 2001. The course has the only island green in the state of New Mexico. Also at Towa are a large clubhouse, pro shop and restaurant. Call the number above for tee times.

This course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., offers remarkable views. From the three tee-box locations, the course measures 6,451, 5,996 and 5,292 yards. Call the number above for tee times.

This older-style course is made for straight hitters, has two tee locations and measures 6,440 and 5,499 yards. Call the number above for tee times.
Angel Fire 377.3055
Approximately an hour and a half from Santa Fe. It offers the area’s only mountain course. With three tee-box locations, the course measures 6,624, 6,268 and 5,328 yards. The course has an excellent short-game practice area. Call the number above for tee times.
Snowboarding and Skiing
When the air turns cool and the leaves drop from the aspens, many residents dig out their skis and snowboards. New Mexico has numerous ski areas, mainly in the northern portion of the state. Call the following numbers for information on special seasonal activities at these nearby ski areas:
Ski Santa Fe 982.4429
Approximately 30 minutes from Santa Fe in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the Santa Fe Ski Area features 43 trails served by seven lifts. The season runs from Thanksgiving until Easter and the lifts are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. 20% of the terrain is rated as easy (or green), 40% is more difficult (blue) and 40 % is most difficult (black). The ski area provides ski and snowboard rentals and lessons, restaurants, day care and a small apparel boutique. Lodging is not available. www.skisantafe.com
Taos Ski Valley 982.9600
Some of the best skiing in the country can be found at this resort, which is approximately 100 miles north of Santa Fe. The season runs from Thanksgiving until April 8, and lifts are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Seventy-two trails are serviced by 12 lifts, including four quads. 20% of the terrain is classified for beginners, 24% is intermediate, 45 % is advanced and 11% is expert. Snowboards are not allowed. Northeast of Santa Fe near Taos, Angel Fire maintains 67 trails serviced by six lifts, including two high-speed quads. It has New Mexico’s only halfpipe and three terrain parks for snowboarders. The season runs from the day before Thanksgiving until the first Sunday in April. Lifts are open from 9 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. daily. 31% of the runs are considered easy (green), 48% is more difficult (blue) and 21% is most difficult (black). Just outside of Los Alamos, Pajarito maintains five lifts serving 37 trails. The season runs from mid-December through mid-April, including all federal holidays except Christmas. Lifts are open from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. 20% of the runs are rated easy (green), 50% are more difficult (blue) and 30% are most difficult (black). Santa Fe’s newest addition to the city’s swimming facilities. The indoor pool is immense, with a 50-meter lap pool, spa sauna, therapy pool and leisure pool with two slides. Dozens of classes and programs are available on site, as well as extensive fitness facilities. The pools and ice skating rink are open year-round. Hours for the center are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Friday; 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. Admission varies per activity, and it is recommended that participants buy a pass (it saves you money).
Four city-operated public swimming pools are open from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily, from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Schedules may change on the weekend. Three pools are outdoor only. Fort Marcy is indoors and open year-round. Each pool has times set aside for recreational, lap and group swimming. Fort Marcy also offers water-aerobics classes. Admission for all pool locations: 30 cents for ages 7 and under; 75 cents for ages 8-12 and seniors; $1.50 for ages 13-18; and ages 19-59 are $1.85. Call 955.2511

Residents of Eldorado can use the community swimming pool, which is open daily 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Residents must have a pool pass (available at the swimming pool), which is included in the annual homeowners’ association fee. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day.
